Surviving from the verge of extinction

When you look for a car, you will always have loads of questions on your mind in picking one. Similar to looking for a life partner you tend to analyze every aspect of that particular person which in this case the car. Now putting budget aside, we tend to look at the design of the car and how economical the car is coz a car too many is a liability in life. For myself I always have the concept of having a car that is nice looking and also have a little concern on the power of the car. Yeah you might say that the ultimate purpose of a car would be taking you from point A to point B anyway. I like to look at it as taking you from point A to B with comfort, style and in one piece! Many of you will know that proton is Malaysia’s one and only car manufacturer in my country. Telling you that my family does not own a Proton is a lie but I am not a big fan of this company. My sister owns a Proton Wira 1.5 which basically a Mitsubishi Lancer with a Proton badge on it.

Proton Malaysia to me is one of the worst car manufacturers in my personal opinion. They have done one good thing for our country, which they have actually made cars affordable to the not so wealthy society and the concept is great. You can see many people owning cars all over our country. Therefore making Proton an affordable priced car has its consequences. Ultimately they have basically made other cars more expensive with the 300% tax on foreign cars, so that’s the price we have to pay coz the government thought if this tax is not there proton won’t be surviving til now. Even the tax is still being imposed, there are people that I know refuse to buy proton for just what they have produced. I would say that they did everything bad, from what I can remember when Proton and Mitsubishi where partners, the cars that was out was pretty good and reliable. That is the engine is entirely Mitsubishi anyways.

Let’s take the so-called latest creation of Proton the Proton Persona for instance. How in heavens name would they even dare to call it their latest creation and the pride of Proton? Take a look at that car and tell me which part of the car is a new design? Adding a boot to the car does not make it a new car. It’s a Gen 2 with a boot and that’s about it. How can you be proud of something like that? I remembered the day that they launched the car, it was in a box with a few holes on it and you can take a glimpse of the car, such suspense and in the end it was a bad ending to a highly bad reputation company. Its like they don’t have any ideas in coming out with a car anymore. At least if you want to come out with the car call it Gen 2 special or something and not call it a new creation. I can go on for another 20 pages on how bad this is. It was a few years back which I was involved with a car forum on the argument of the Gen 2 and one of them (an American) told me that either GM or Ford rejected the Gen 2 design on the Proton Gen 2 concept, saying that is a really badly designed car and it was not safe to begin with. I do not know if this is true but I have driven the car and the view from the inside is pretty limited and practically the rear view mirror does not help a lot due to the design of the back. If I can’t see the back with the rear view mirror then I would buy myself an 18-wheeler lorry, which would be cooler.

The bottom line is if they go on like that I can’t imagine what will be the outcome. There are rumors that the government is going to strike out the 300% tax for all foreign cars in the near future. I would think that will be the ultimate downfall of Proton if they don’t buck up and I do not want to see that happen coz I am Malaysian !

NOW SPOT THE DIFFERENCE !

About the Author

When I was a little younger, I never had the interest in cars at all. Somehow it picked it up when I was in high school and oh yeah did I mention my dad and brother loves cars as well? I am more of a Japanese Car lover then any other car but don’t get me wrong I like the rest as well. Let’s just say that Jap cars are the first on my list. Drifting, racing circuits and rallying, these are the thing that I love to do but I can’t! Well let’s just say I don’t have the skills for these kind of things. So the only thing I do is occasionally drive fast on the road when I am provoked by a much slower car or in par. "All you need to see is my tail light" turboturtle

  1. Thanks a lot. Before I was peacefully ignorant, but now you’ve tossed out a perfectly good question and revealed to me yet another topic for my List of Things I Know That I Don’t Know.

  2. Glad to be of assistance!

  3. quite like the satria neo…. much better than the gen2/persona. improved interior as well. then again, the neo/gen2/persona r just re-engineered renaults.

  4. 🙁 I am riding on a Proton which is my current “wife” :~( But i still love my “wife” very muchhhhh though with the criticisms, it was not her fault to be born this way ! :p
